CISAM - International Studies on Avant-Gardes and Modernity, was founded at the University of Bergamo in 1998, in order to promote and support interdisciplinary research and cultural / editorial initiatives concerning the two major themes of avant-garde and modernity, with special regard to forms of literary, artistic and cultural expression.

The international and interdisciplinary horizon of CISAM is testified by the variety of scientific perspectives pursued by both its members and its International Honorary Committee. The centre aims to explore in depth the three crucial disciplinary fields of history, art history and, most significantly, literature, as well as traditional and contemporary languages of communication (the discourses of fashion, journalism, photography, cinema, and the mass-media).

The term "modern" indicates that CISAM intends to give prominence to themes, authors and issues spanning the period from the post-romantic age and symbolism to the present. Special attention is given to the relationship between text and image, to genres hybridization, and to the dynamics of transgression and innovation, always considered in a historical perspective.

CISAM is endowed with highly-qualified International Honorary Committee of distinguished Professors and Scholars, and its primary activity is to promote, sponsor and organize meetings, round tables, conferences, one day seminars, and lectures on its selected topics.

In 2014 CISAM founded two book series, CISAM Essays and CISAM Texts each of them peer-reviewed by a highly-qualified editorial board and an International Referee Committee. While the former series aims at combining historical and cultural reflections on genre, style, and poetics by coming to terms with the most pressing contemporary issues in literary studies, the latter aspires to merge rigorous research imperatives with the desire to make available, on the international and/or Italian arena, the yet unpublished texts of some of the major authors of the (inter)national literary and artistic modernity. CISAM Texts is thus addressed to a potentially wider public than the specialist academic community.

In addition to this, CISAM is currently actively involved in several cooperation projects with international research centres and universities across Europe and beyond, resulting in research publications in several modern languages.
