The conference is organized within the initiatives for EXPO2015 and it is related to the project Centrality of Territories, created and coordinated by the University of Bergamo, within which a European network of cities similar to Bergamo has been created (Beauvais, Cambridge, Charleroi, Girona, Lübeck and Santander). These are medium-sized cities, located close to a metropolitan area, hosting a University, treasuring a remarkable city center and being connected by a low-cost terminal. The results of the research - initially focused on the analysis of territorial resources for the development of an international tourism based on micro-entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability and citizens participation - showed the potential of new synergies with other cities and territorial contexts. The network in fact presents the possibility to think about new forms of planning for an urban regeneration in a European connected perspective.
The event is important for the collaboration between Universities and Municipalities as it shows the enlargement of the university network (framework agreement signed on March 4th 2014) and the constitution of a multilevel network which involves the Municipalities, considering the agents of mobility (in primis airports and airlines) as interested observers.
The conference is structured in three sessions and it is opened by an introductory speech on the internationalization of Bergamo as well as the signature of a framework agreement among the European Mayors. The first session is dedicated to local institutions willing to discuss about the policies activated for urban regeneration and tourism valorization, focusing on the skills each city can share with the others. The second session, dedicated to air connectivity, will be centered on the history of flows generated by low-cost flights analyzing their potential for European integration. Finally, the session dedicated to Universities will present the book Centrality of Territories: verso la rigenerazione di Bergamo in un network europeo, as it collects the results of the first phase of the research (2013-2014). Furthermore, University researchers will present the potentials of the network for university cooperation and for applied research on territories. In fact, the multilevel network envisages the transfer of scientific principles to action and applied experimentations. By facilitating the development of integrated actions and synergies between Universities, local authorities and private actors, the competitiveness of territories can be promoted, according to the principles of sustainability, innovation and social equity, the three pillars of the Europe 2020 Strategy.
The European partners, besides the conference, will attend the No Frills - Travel and Technology Event, where they will present their cities, universities and airports.
