Bergamo Migration Atlas

Cartography of Bergamo, Italian and European Emigration Worldwide between the end of XIX Century and the beginning of XXI Century (2009-2010)

Archive research: research in historical archives about migration systems of Bergamo, Italy and Europe: identification of a temporal division in order to divide the historical period; collection of sample data related to restricted territorial contexts and periods; data collection at different territorial scale based on direct contacts with national and international statistics centers (CSER - Centro Studi Emigrazione di Roma, Eurostat, single national statistics centers); in-depth analysis of information specifically related to particularly relevant periods.

Statistic data collection: it has been carried out by multiple territorial units - from international to national scale and from national to local scale - in order to contextualize and compare the territorial context of Bergamo.

Bibliographic research: it focused on migration flows of Bergamo, Italy and Europe and it has been based on the libraries’ catalogues of scientific centers, university institutions and national and international government offices in charge of monitoring migration systems, study geography of mobility and involve cartographic communicative systems; consultation of scientific journals; analysis of on-line publications.

Field research: through the interviews of privileged interlocutors (directors of Bergamaschi nel Mondo organization) it has been possible to unfold crucial aspects of emigrants’ territorial organization: activities' establishment, creation of associations and clubs of Bergamaschi nel Mondo, use of local services for emigrants.

Cartographic testing: processing of 2d and 3d maps using GIS - Geographic Information System (ArcGIS9, 3d analyst, e MapInfo6), graphic software (Sketch Up Pro 5, Adobe Photoshop), WebGIS e on-line mapping (GoogleEarth, Google Map), based on: grassroots georeferred data (both vector and raster – such as SHP, JPEG, TIFF - for 2d e DTM representations – such as TIN for 3d); statistic data; terrain data.

Chinese Diaspora within the City and Province Territory of Bergamo (2005-2008)

Fieldwork: through the interviews of privileged interlocutors (cultural mediators and laoban, representatives of the Chinese immigrant group in Bergamo) and a sample of immigrants, it has been possible to unfold crucial aspects of emigrants' territorial organization: establishment of commercial activities, creation of associations, use of private and public spaces and use of local services.

Statistic data collection: it has been carried out by multiple territorial units - from international to national scale and from national to local scale - in order to contextualize and compare the territorial context of Bergamo.

Bibliographic research: it focused on international migration flows, especially the Chinese one, and it has been based on national and international libraries’ catalogues, as well as on the main institutions involved in monitoring immigration in Italy (statistics centers, public administrations, research institutions and cooperation organizations).

African Immigrants in Bergamo (2000-2004)

Bibliographic research and fieldwork research within Bergamo city and province aiming at studying the social and territorial organization of African immigrants within Bergamo territory and their social structures.
