Roberto Fineschi, University of Siena - Dialectics of the commodity and its exhibition. The German debate since the 70s: a personal survey

The publication of the MEGA, started in the 70s, and the debate begun at the end of the 60s allowed German scholars to focus on some crucial points, in particular the starting category of the theory of capital and its dialectics. Some argued that the dialectical exhibition of categories was clearly presented only in the first drafts of the theory while later Marx gradually either hid it or gave it up. Scholars involved in the publication of the critical edition did not share this idea: on their view, Marx did not abandon his dialectical method that, on the contrary, got even stronger each time he re-wrote his theory (i.e. only in the second German edition of Book I he presented a clear distinction between value and exchange-value); what he gave up "partially however" was only the dialectical terms, not the dialectical exhibition.
