STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT
The success of a company over time is described by its strategy. The future stands on the ability to find the direction to recreate the conditions for growth, even under great uncertainty and a very fast global changing environment. Uncertainty and complexity are the main issues of the current global scenarios to be exploited through increasing strategic management capabilities.
Strategic change and complexity management are the main issues of the new millennium both for economics and business. The concept of strategic management deals with the basic directions and goals of organizations, industries, market structures and the impact of the new technologies.The main part of the course concerns the strategic evolution effect of the digital transformation, a pervasive radical innovation that changes the traditional strategic plans in a short time and generates great opportunities if the rapid paradigm changes are captured.
The course consists of two modules, one for each term: Theory (37176-1) and Practice (37176-2).
Theory module deals with the following topics:
- What is strategy - definition of strategic management and overview of different strategy perspectives
- Identification and analysis of key macro-environmental drivers; relationship between industry structure and industry profitability, strategic group analysis, scenario planning
- Cost leader and differentiation strategies (Generic strategies), market oriented positioning approaches (Strategy clock)
- Resource and capability based view of the firm, value chain and activity systems, capabilities and core rigidities, competence destroying competition, differentiation / conformity paradox
- The role of strategic purpose, the evaluation of strategic options, critical appraisal of the practice of strategy
Practice module includes strategic planning case-study sessions applied to real cases and meetings with managers and entrepreneurs aimed at deepening the methodologies learned during the Theory module.
